The Department of Criminal Records is responsible for maintaining case file records in criminal and traffic matters before the 16th Judicial Circuit Court. These records consist of documentation of traffic violations and of misdemeanor and felony charges against individuals.
The Department maintains two (2) office locations: The Albert Riederer Community Justice Complex at 1315 Locust, Kansas City, MO, and in the Independence Courthouse at 308 W Kansas, Suite 310, Independence, MO. Office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The Attorney General’s Office represents and provides legal advice to most state agencies; defends challenges to the validity of state laws; enforces civil law, including consumer protection and environmental laws; defends the State’s interest in civil actions, including bankruptcies, workers’ compensation claims, professional licensing cases, and habeas corpus actions filed by state and federal inmates; and serves as a special prosecutor in criminal cases when appointed. In addition, the Office handles all appeals statewide from felony convictions.
The Attorney General's Criminal Division endeavors to uphold criminal convictions and sentences obtained by the State’s prosecuting attorneys. The division represents the State in all felony appeals and felony post-conviction appeals, and in cases where sexually violent predators have been committed to the Department of Mental Health for care and treatment. The division also handles a small number of driver’s license revocation appeals. Attorneys from the division appear regularly in Missouri’s appellate courts, and in recent years they have handled more than 800 appeals each year.
Missouri Association of Prosecuting Attorneys
In 1969, the Missouri Association of Prosecuting Attorneys (MAPA) was established to provide uniformity in the discharge of duties to Missouri’s 115 elected prosecuting and circuit attorneys. In 1981, MAPA collaborated with the State of Missouri and formed the Missouri Office of Prosecution Services (MOPS) to assist prosecuting attorneys in their efforts against criminal activity within the state. MOPS is an autonomous entity governed by the Prosecutors Coordinators Training Council, and is staffed by a team of career prosecutors and dedicated professionals who proudly stand with Missouri’s prosecutors in protecting our communities.
Missouri State Public Defender
The Missouri Public Defender System (MSPD) is the organization responsible for providing legal representation to all indigent citizens accused of or convicted of crimes in Missouri. Working with MSPD allows individuals to make a difference in their community, gain valuable work experience, and provide assistance. MSPD is a statewide agency primarily comprised of three legal service divisions: the Trial Division, Capital Division, and Appellate/Post-Conviction Division. Attorneys in district offices within each division provide direct representation to our clients.
