Probation and Pretrial Services

The U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services System carries out probation and pretrial services functions in the U.S. district courts. 

Defender Services

The mission of the Defender Services program is to ensure that the right to counsel guaranteed by the Sixth Amendment, the Criminal Justice Act (18 U.S.C. § 3006A), and other congressional mandates is enforced on behalf of those who cannot afford to retain counsel and other necessary defense services.

  • Post Conviction Risk Assessment : This overview, published September 2011, provides information for federal judges and legal practitioners about the Federal Post Conviction Risk Assessment (PCRA). Developed by the Administrative Office of the United States Courts, the PCRA is designed to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of post-conviction supervision.
