The encyclopedias American Jurisprudence 2d and Corpus Juris Secundum are excellent starting places for a broad overview of the organization of any field of law, to see how it is structured and what the major elements are within each field.

Click on AmJur2d for the topical list and scroll to Criminal Law.  See for example Part Two, XXI Rights and Privileges of Persons in Police Custody > Click > go to §916 What constitutes custody and Click.  The Am. Jur2d article combines the West Key Number Digest for caselaw searching; the American Law Report (ALR) Library, other related West treatises e.g. Proof of Facts, the analysis with footnotes and supplemental cases. Follow the same process in Corpus Juris Secundum for similar results.

Go back to the WestlawNext Homepage click on Secondary Sources and under By Type go to American Law Reports (ALR).  Unlike the broad overview of AmJur or CJS, ALR provides heavily annotated and deep treatment of very specific questions. Click American Law Reports and on the right under Tools & Resources , click American Law Reports Digest.  Scroll to Criminal Law and click.  Use the search box at the top for <custody>  or scroll to XVII Evidence (M) Statements...by or on Behalf of the Accused and scroll to 411.21 What Constitutes Custody then 411.22 for link to specific article What Constitutes "Custodial Interrogation" by Police Officer Within Rule of Miranda v. Arizona Requiring That Suspect be Informed of Federal Constitutional Rights Before Custodial Interrogation—Where Unspecified as to Precise Location of Roadside Questioning by Law Enforcement Officers, 58 A.L.R.6th 215.
