SciFinder is an indispensable resource for chemistry and healthcare students, but it hasn't really had any notable applications for business...until this week. With the Libraries resubscription to SciFinder, we have also been granted access to CAS Formulus. Offering us the ability to search for drug formulations and ingredients, CAS Formulus not only provides pharmacological information, it also provides patent information. For Bloch students who may be studying patents or who may move into Healthcare Administration, this additional resource may prove quite helpful.
It is important to note that all CAS database products do require the added step of creating a CAS registration, which is free. To register, visit the CAS registration page, then follow the prompts to create an account. You will need to use your UM System email (@umsystem.edu) email. Once you have registered, you will be granted access to all CAS resources within UMKC's subscription.
If you are seeking patent information in CAS Formulus, simply open the database from our databases list, then sign in. Once you are in the search interface, choose the formulation or ingredients you would like to research. In the image below, you'll see I'm searching for the medication called Naproxen.
When the formulation's information page is up, users will see a full description of the formula, as well as a link to its patent information on the right side of the page.
From there, either download the patent PDF or view the full patent page in SciFinder.
As always, if you have questions or problems while using this resource, please get in touch with a librarian via chat, email, or at the service desk!
