Frequently Asked Questions: Using the UMKC Law Library Catalog

Q1: How do I access the law library catalog?

A: You can access the law library catalog through the library's official website. Look for the single search bar on the library main page at https://law.umkc.edu/law-library/.

Q2: What resources are available through the catalog?

A: The catalog allows you to search for various resources including books, journals, electronic resources, legal databases, and sometimes even specific articles or case law materials. Additionally, you can access resources from all University of Missouri System schools through this catalog.

Q3: Can I access resources from other libraries?

A: Yes! Our catalog has links to MOBIUS, a consortium that covers 78 universities and public libraries across Missouri, and WorldCat, a catalog that spans 10,000 libraries around the world. This greatly expands the resources available to you.  Buttons for these are located at the top of the advanced search page and the results search page.

Q4: How do I perform a basic search?

A: Enter keywords related to your topic, author name, or title in the search bar on the catalog's main page. Then click the "Search" or "Go" button to view results.

Q5: Are there advanced search options available?

A: Yes, the catalog offers advanced search options. Look for an "Advanced Search" link near the main search bar. This allows you to narrow your search by fields like publication date, material type, or specific collections.

Q6: How can I find a specific legal journal?

A: Use the advanced search option and select “SO Journal Title/Source” from the dropdown menu. Enter the journal's name in the title field for best results.  From the library home page, underneath the search bar is a button labeled, “eJournals.”  It will help you locate databases that have specific journals.

Q7: Can I access electronic resources through the catalog?

A: Many resources in the catalog include links to electronic versions. Look for indicators like "E-book" or "Online Access" in the search results.

Q8: How do I locate a physical item in the library?

A: Once you've found an item in the catalog, note its call number. This alphanumeric code helps you locate the item on the library shelves. If you're unsure, ask a librarian for assistance.  You can also text a call number to yourself with the “Text Call #” link.

Q9: Can I request items from other University of Missouri System libraries?

A: Yes, you can request items from other UM System libraries through the catalog. Look for a "Request" or "Get It" button next to the item in your search results.  You will need to specify that you want the item delivered to the UMKC Law Library.

Q10: How do I use MOBIUS to access resources from other Missouri libraries?

A: When searching the catalog, you will see a button on the right hand for MOBIUS. This will take you to the MOBIUS catalog and allow you to search across 78 university and public libraries in the state of Missouri.  You can request these items directly through the MOBIUS catalog. They will be delivered to your home library for pickup.

Q11: How long does it take to receive items from other UM System schools or MOBIUS libraries?

A: Delivery times vary, but items from other UM System schools usually arrive within 2-3 business days. MOBIUS items may take 3-5 business days.

Q12: Can I place a hold on a book that's currently checked out?

A: Yes, you can place holds on most items. Look for a "Place Hold" or "Request" button next to the item in the catalog. You may need to log in to your library account to use this feature.

Q13: How do I know if a resource is available for checkout?

A: The catalog displays the item's status, such as "Available," "Checked Out," or "On Reserve." This information is typically shown next to the item in your search results.

Q14: Can I access the catalog from off-campus?

A: Yes, the catalog is accessible off-campus. However, you may need to log in with your university credentials to access certain electronic resources remotely.
