Evaluating Web Sources

Information found on the internet has added a new dimension to selecting resources. It's important to keep in mind that anyone can create a website and no one has evaluated the quality or accuracy of the information found on the web. Some websites are created by subject experts, but the vast majority are created by non-experts.

Just because information is published -- whether it be in a book or journal or on the internet -- does not make it is true. You must take the time to check the accuracy and quality of the information you use. The Internet has tons of good stuff, but it is also full of unreliable or questionable information. Before you use a website for research purposes, be sure to consider the following:

  • Currency - Is the information up to date?
  • Relevance - Does the information meet your need?
  • Authority - Is the source trustworthy?
  • Accuracy - Is the information correct?
  • Purpose - Why was the website created? Is there a bias?
