When and What Do I Cite?

Cite anything you write or create that uses or refers to the ideas of another person, including:

direct quotations
paraphrasing of passages
indebtedness to another person for an idea
use of another student's work
use of your own previous work

You do not need to cite information that is common knowledge.

Zotero
A free, easy-to-use browser plugin that helps you collect, organize, and cite sources. Works with Microsoft Word and Google Docs to easily incorporate citations and bibliographies into your papers. A groups feature allows you to share work with collaborators. Works best installed on your own computer; web access has limited features. EndNote
A citation tool with a plugin for Microsoft Word. The desktop version and web version are available to UMKC faculty and staff; only the web version is available to students. Helps format and save citations in almost any citation style. Access it from anywhere.

Mendeley
Part reference manager, part social network for academics, Mendeley can automatically generate bibliographies, import and store papers from other research software, find relevant related research papers. You can also collaborate with other researchers from around the world. Mendeley has an app for iPhone and iPad users.
