When and What Do I Cite?

Cite anything you write or create that uses or refers to the ideas of another person, including:

  • direct quotations
  • paraphrasing of passages
  • indebtedness to another person for an idea
  • use of another student's work
  • use of your own previous work

You do not need to cite information that is common knowledge.

UMKC Writing Studio

The Writing Studio offers free peer consultation services for students at the undergraduate and graduate level. Peer consultants assist with all aspects of writing, from class assignments to personal projects.

Schedule a 30-minute or 60-minute, one-on-one consultation with a peer tutor. Meet in person or virtually. Make an appointment.

Drop in to the Writing Studio in the Atterbury Student Success Center or the Miller Nichols Library during open hours
