Using the Library

A new international student coming to study in the USA faces many challenges. The UMKC Libraries have many tools to help you fulfill your library research needs.

Library video

This video shows the UMKC Libraries spaces, and describes library services. Open the video in YouTube to see a text transcript that you may translate.

Asking questions or getting help

If you need to ask a research question, or need help on how to find a book or an article you need, you can call us at (816) 235-1526, email the library, instant message with a librarian on the library website, visit the Service Desk on the first floor of Miller Nichols Library or the Health Sciences Library service desk for help.

Borrowing Library Materials

Borrowing library materials at UMKC may be a little different than it is at your home country's libraries. For example, you can borrow 1,999 items from the the library at one time. You just need to show your student ID and you can check out library materials or claim your Interlibrary Loan-requested item. It is also worth noting that undergraduate and graduate students have different loan periods in borrowing library materials. For more information, please check the links below to make full use of library borrowing privileges.

Library Technology

The library is a resource center; it also is a study center. You can use your own laptop, or you can use a library computer. Miller Nichols Library has two computer areas: one on the first floor of Miller Nichols Library, and one on the second floor. The second floor computer lab is managed by UMKC Information Services. Printers are located on the ground floor and first floor. Scanners are located on the ground floor and first floor. The entire building is supplied with wireless Internet access. It is an ideal place for you to study and do your homework. The Health Sciences Library has computers, printers, a scanner, and wireless Internet.
