Let's say you find an article that cites data, and you want to use it. How do you find it?

  • Sometimes article authors will cite data you can get access to. You can locate what data they have cited by checking the citations.
    1. For example: If you find a citation that uses data, note the citation number.
Close up of an article about water quatity, a sentence is highlighted that has the citation numbers 48,49,50

    2. Then go to the bibliography/references page and get the information on the item.
The bibliography of the previous article, showing the citations of 48,49,50

    3. From there use the information listed to find the study/article you need

  • When looking at a data citation, ask:
    • Is the data original to the author? Then cite the data directly from the article.
    • Is the data cited from elsewhere? Then check the citation listed and track the original study/article.
    • Need help tracking the citation? Contact a Librarian!
