Books are secondary literature. They provide an overview of background information for a topic. If you have a question about a disease or a treatment that is unfamiliar to you, or you need an overview to learn more about a topic, or learn about the historical development of a topic, books are a place to begin. Secondary literature may not have the most updated information, though that may soon change with the increasing popularity of online books that can be updated electrocnically. The Health Sciences Library has electronic books available for access online using your single sign-on and password.
