Voting ballots

Make a Voting Plan

  1. Decide how you will vote. Information about all of the following voting options is on the state or local (county) election office website for the place you are registered to vote. Find your election office
    • Vote in person on election day
      • Know your assigned voting location, also called a polling location.
      • Make a plan for transportation, and time off from work. 
    • Vote in person early
      • Look up early voting dates and locations in your state.
      • Make a plan for transportation, and time off from work.
    • Vote by mail
      • Request a mail-in ballot by your state's required date.
      • Follow all the instructions to properly complete your ballot.
      • Mail it back by your state's deadline.
    • Vote absentee
      • Check to see if you qualify to vote absentee based on your state's rules.
      • Request an absentee ballot by your state's required date.
      • Follow all the instructions to properly complete your ballot.
      • Return your completed ballot to your local election office or ballot return box.
  2. Find out how you can vote in your state, the deadlines for voting that way, and what you need to vote. Each state has rules for forms of identification you can use to vote, like drivers licenses, college IDs, or birth certificates.
