Legal training opportunities for UMKC Law Students.

Introduction

To build a strong foundation in legal tech skills, it is imperative that you master important tools like Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, case management systems, etc. These tools are essential for lawyers, and we want you to become proficient in using them.

The following are some of the opportunities UMKC Law Students.

  1. Legal Technology Assessment (Procetas): these trainings feature short modules targeting specific skills like Word memo, drafting, Excel etc.
  2. Legal Technology Certificates (NSLT): the certificate programs require a longer commitment. They provide students with an opportunity to master general legal technology programs as well as e-discovery tools.

Legal Technology Assessment

We’ve partnered with Procertas – a comprehensive platform that provides immersive and practical training for lawyers. This training covers a range of essential legal skills, including contract writing, memo composition, brief preparation, and professional presentation creation. Each module is supplemented by a trainer and assessment component, allowing you to build on your existing skillset.

These modules are available as assignments in existing courses. Students will be required to achieve a minimum proficiency level determined by the instructor in the following modules:

  • Word contract
  • Word brief
  • Word memo
  • Excel for law
  • PDF for law
  • PowerPoint

Time Commitment:

The time to complete this assignment varies by student. However, the following are the average times necessary to complete each module:

The Legal Technology Certificate is our proactive educational response. II equips students with essential skills in digital tools and technologies reshaping legal practice. With a focus on applications from document management to case organization, this certificate ensures that graduates are practice-ready, enabling them to seamlessly transition into modern legal environments and excel from day one.

Each software title is broken into several 5 - 10-minute modules. This allows students to complete the certificate at their own pace and as their own time schedule allows.

EDiscovery Technology Certificate

The eDiscovery Technology Certificate is a joint initiative by the Association of E-Discovery Specialists (ACEDS) and the National Society for Legal Technology (NSLT). This program offers practical training tailored specifically for law students looking to gain a competitive edge in the evolving legal field. This focused program offers in-depth, practical training in the latest e-discovery software, crucial for managing the increasingly digital nature of legal evidence.
