Where to Start?
If you are a musician, you cut your musical teeth on pieces by German and Austrian composers: Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn, Bach, Brahms, and many many more. In your music history courses, you learn how their music became part of various -isms, when patronage fell out of fashion, and when Nationalism meant turning away from Germanic influences, if that was at all possible.
But what about the context in which these works were written? What about the political, economic, and social environments as well as what was being created in the fine and performing arts aside from music? We'll provide some tips for finding relevant information in library resources for your intellectual journey to learn more about the influences on music in German culture.
